Matthew is on top of the world!

Year 8 student, Matthew Wadsworth, finished 5th in the Under 12 section of the World Youth Chess Championships yesterday.  This is quite an achievement as there were over 200 players in the competition.

Matthew was unbeaten over the eleven rounds of the event, the only England player from the team of 34 to remain unbeaten.  He was also one of the few of unbeaten players in the entire competition.  He ended up half a point off the gold medal - if he had won one of his drawn games, he would have become the world champion.

Matthew was also the highest scoring member of the entire England team, and the highest-placed finisher.  Amongst his victims along the way was the number 2 seed in his section, with perhaps his finest game of the event.

Matthew also got to meet Garry Kasparov, who was guest of honour at last night's prize giving event.
