1st XV Win the County Cup
Reading School 1st XV competed in the County cup final against Downs School under floodlights at Maidenhead RFC on Friday night.
It was a fantastic evening for rugby with a travelling crowd of parents and teachers cheering on the team.
Downs put Reading under immediate pressure from the kick off and scored a penalty with the first 3 minutes of the game. Reading Rallied through the forward pack with the lineout and driving maul performing particularly well putting the boys into a good position to score. Reading gained a kickable penalty in front of the posts but quick thinking from Captain Will Taylor with a tap and go saw him race in under the posts.
The forward dominance of O’Brien, Malone and Rowe and organisation of the back line from Henderson, Lane and Husain continued for the rest of the half with Taylor adding another and Corin Miles dancing his way down the touchline after and effective kick and chase, making the score 17:3 at half time.
The second half began similarly to the first with the big Downs side exerting pressure on the Reading line and after a series of pick and goes the try line was breached. Sean Kuponiyi then took the game into his own hands with a fantastic break from his own 10m line making the score 24-8 to then be yellow carded after the restart for a high tackle.
This gave Downs the upper hand for 8 minutes mounting continuous attacks but the Reading line would not be breached during this period. It was not until after this period that Downs managed to squeeze over the line making the score 24:13 turning the final 5 minutes into a nervous affair for players, parents and supporters.
Reading’s resilient defence continued as it had all night with the final score Reading 24, Downs 13. Congratulations to the squad on a fantastic season, and to the year 13’s for their time, commitment and dedication to Reading School Rugby over the last 7 years.
