Frequently Asked Questions regarding Offer of Places

Q

I have been offered a place at Reading School but have not had any communication from the school itself.

A

Letters were posted on Friday 1st March by first class post.  If you have not received your letter by Friday 8th March please contact the school.

Q

I have not had an offer from my Local Authority.

A

Please contact your Local Authority.

Q

Is my son on the waiting list?

A

If your son achieved the pass mark he will be on our waiting list unless you have been offered a place at your higher preference school.

The waiting list consists of the ranked order of candidates (adjusted for those living within the designated area) who achieved the pass mark who have not been offered a place at Reading School.

As at 1st March 2013 there were 47 candidates on the waiting list;

Q

My son achieved the pass mark but has not been offered a place.  Why?

A

This is because the 100 day places and 12 boarding places have been offered to the highest scoring candidates.  Your son will have been placed on our waiting list (please see Question above).

Q

My son achieved the pass mark and has not been offered a place or been placed on your waiting list.  Why?

A

This is likely to be because your Local Authority has been able to offer you a place at the school that you indicated as a higher preference.

Q

Can I change my preference and put Reading first?

A

Please contact your own Local Authority.

Q

Can I appeal?

A

If your child is not offered a place at the school of your choice, you have a right to appeal against this decision to an Independent Appeal Panel.  In appealing, you should feel that there are very good mitigating circumstances for your son not gaining at place at Reading School which you believe affected his performance on the day.  Please also consider the appeal in light of your son’s overall score and ranked position.

Appeals should be lodged to:

Clerk to the Appeals Panel
Committee Services
Reading Borough Council
Civic Centre
Reading

Tel: 0118 9372532
Or submit an appeal online at www.reading.gov.uk/schooladmissions

Deadline for submitting an appeal is 29 March 2013. Appeals will normally be heard during May.
