Year 10 Mathematicians compete in the Maths Feast 2019
The Year 10 Maths Feast is an enjoyable and challenging team competition testing mathematical, team-working and communication skills
Two teams of Year 10 students (including Archie T (10C), Adam P (10S), Saharsh A (10E), Arran J (10W), Ciaran S (10E), Saleh Y (10S), Luke S (10S) and Mustafa C (10E) were selected to represent Reading School at the Maths Feast hosted at The Downes School. Accompanied by Mrs. N Williams (Teacher of Mathematics) and Ms. L Purnell (Teacher of Physics).
The Maths Feast is organised by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme , which is a government-funded initiative, managed by MEI. It aims to increase participation in Core Maths, AS/A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics, and improve the teaching of these level 3 maths qualifications. Each year the format of the Maths Feast competition changes slightly so that the rounds remain interesting and exciting.
Mustafa C (10E) said:
“The Maths Feast involved a variety of challenges ranging from quick mental maths to doing problems on an advanced area of mathematics we were unlikely to have done before and using its theories and algorithms (finding trees in Networks with the lowest weights.) The 4 rounds lasted around 3 hours at The Downs School and were challenging and (very!) competitive between 15 other teams. Despite an excellent performance, coming 1st in the advanced topic round getting full marks and 2nd on the 3rd round, we tripped up on a common sense question to draw with our other team in join 2nd place.”
Special thanks to Mrs. N Williams (Teacher of Mathematics) and Ms. L Purnell (Teacher of Physics) for arranging participation and The Downs School for kindly hosting the event.
