Commemoration Day – A Royal Visit

For generations, the Reading School community has gathered for an annual Service of Commemoration, celebrating the founding of the School in 1125. It is our way of honouring those who have served our town, and an opportunity to rededicate ourselves to the School’s calling. This year, the occasion holds particular significance as we give thanks for nine centuries of teaching, service and social impact.

Today, on Friday 28th November, Reading School welcomed His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh KG KT GCVO to commemorate the School’s 900th anniversary and its Commemoration Day.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s visit marked a significant milestone in the School’s history and underscored the vital importance of Reading School’s commitment to delivering exceptional, inclusive education for local children. His Royal Highness’s longstanding dedication to championing young people resonated deeply with all those present, reminding staff, students, parents and guests that strong community partnerships lie at the heart of all that is good about the School.

During the visit, The Duke observed local primary school pupils taking part in Reading School’s social impact programme, Future Stories, which is designed to raise aspirations, build confidence and broaden access to high-quality learning opportunities. This long-running programme helps remove barriers so that children from all backgrounds can benefit from the opportunities provided by a Reading School education.

The visit concluded with a Commemoration Service attended by the Reading School community, The Berkshire Lieutenancy, MP Matt Rodda, the Mayor of Reading, invited guests and local partners.

Rev'd Dr Chris Evans shared during his Commemoration Day address:

“How do we celebrate a 900th anniversary? What’s the right gift, or the right spirit? What’s the right protocol for 900 years of shaping society?

Perhaps the right way to celebrate 900 years is through humility that recognises we are here but for a while… My hope is that we're humble enough to say there will be better schools. There will be older institutions. There will be other bricks worth looking at, another stained-glass window to admire.

It’s a small thing to be part of this community, so let us proceed with humility. Let us together this day celebrate. Enjoy all that grace, and all that goodness, while proceeding humbly with hope in our hearts, and even though this too shall pass, may we live knowing the best is yet to be.”
