    Pastoral Care

“Children are enthusiastic when talking about the staff who care for them, the social aspect of boarding, and the extra support that they have for their academic studies. The staff in the boarding houses have an exceptional understanding of the children’s needs and their family dynamics.”

    Outstanding Ofsted Report 2023

Our dedicated team of boarding staff, most of whom live on site, includes two inspirational Housemasters, two Deputy Boarding Housemistress' and eleven Boarding Tutors who are among our most committed teaching staff.

East Wing and South House each have a Matron whose pastoral care is second to none.  Our overriding priority is to promote the health, safety and wellbeing of our pupils.  Mental health and emotional well-being of our boarders is always a key priority.

Every boarder has the support of an assigned year group tutor, who provides regular support and advice. New boarders are supported with a thorough transition programme to integrate them into boarding, as well as benefitting from the support and care of the older boarders within each house.

Boarders also benefit from additional academic support. This includes one and a half hours of supervised homework every evening, with academic support provision for boarders who need additional help. Sixth Form boarders play a very positive part in shaping a culture of aspiration, academic endeavour, co-operation and support and are excellent role models for the younger boys.

    The Medical Centre

Both Matrons have extensive training in medical care and all boarding staff complete a range of medical training to ensure effective care of boarders’ health. A local doctors' practice is a 10-minute walk away and appointments can be made for our boarders by the Matrons. The school is also very conveniently located opposite the Royal Berkshire Accident and Emergency Department.

“Children’s health and well-being needs are well met. Matrons are central to understanding and meeting the health needs of the children. Children are well looked after and supported to understand healthy lifestyles and what this means for them.”
