On Friday 28th November, during Reading School’s Commemoration Day, the School’s community gathered, and three generations of Reading School Alumni, Mr Ken Brown (OR 55-63), Mr Ned Holt (OR 66-72), and Revd Dr Chris Evans (OR 90-97) escorted the School’s youngest student, Tanay Jain (7C), who lowered a time capsule into the historic grounds of Reading School, marking nine centuries of learning, service and community.
Inside the capsule sits a small, but significant archive including a letter addressed simply to “The Headmaster — 2125.”
The school community joining together, along with the burying of a time capsule represents that this school is held in trust by each generation, and that our duty, and joy, is to pass it on with gratitude, humility, ambition and care.
As the youngest hands covered the capsule with earth, there was a quiet understanding that what we buried today was more than objects. It was a promise, that in 100 years, when the capsule is opened, the Reading School community of 2125 will find not just mementos, but hope, humour, and the unmistakable heartbeat of a school that knows where it came from and where it aims to go.
Here’s to the next century.
