‘Reading School scoops the prize for Regional State Secondary of the Year’

The top performing schools in the South East are revealed in Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2018, published in The Sunday Times and online this Sunday, November 26.

Reading School is the top performing state secondary school in the South East and has been named The Sunday Times Southeast State Secondary School of the Year. The school takes 7th place in this year’s national league table of state secondary schools and continues to achieve well at A-level and GCSEs. 93.1% of A-levels resulted in A*s, A’s and B’s this summer up from 89.7% in 2016, whilst 81.1% of GCSEs received A* and A grades.

Alastair McCall said: “Reading School’s A-level achievements this year are among the most exceptional in both the state and independent sectors. As the exams got appreciably harder, pupils’ grades at Reading got appreciably higher. Not many schools can say that this year. An exceptional school, it was the clear winner of our award.”

Ashley Robson, Headmaster said ‘This award is testimony to the exceptional work of our students and staff.  It is right and fitting to celebrate academic excellence.  However, I believe what makes us truly exceptional is that we value developing young men as well as being academically successful.  The challenge now is to create conditions to extend opportunities for boys from all backgrounds, especially students from disadvantaged backgrounds, to benefit from the opportunities we offer.

Reading School is an exceptional school and we wish to make it a world-leading institution that strives for academic excellence, builds champions of character and leadership qualities working in partnership with parents and governors’.
