Admissions Guidelines
Familiarisation
The Reading School In-Year Test is an important part of our admissions process for students applying for a place outside of the standard Year 7 entry point. Designed to assess a broad range of academic abilities, the test ensures that applicants are well-prepared to thrive in our rigorous learning environment. For Year 7 applicants, the assessment focus is on English, Maths, and Creativity, offering a balanced evaluation of core literacy and numeracy skills as well as creative thinking. This approach allows us to identify students who not only meet academic standards but also show potential for imaginative and original thought.
For students applying to join in Years 8 and 9, the test places a greater emphasis on subject-specific knowledge and problem-solving abilities in English, Maths, and Science. This progression reflects the increasing depth and complexity of the curriculum as students advance through school. All tests are conducted online, ensuring accessibility and consistency in administration. To help students become comfortable with the format and expectations, a familiarisation exercise will be provided in advance. This preparation will support applicants in performing to the best of their ability.
Familiarisation Online Test:
Welcome to the Familiarisation Online Test.
This test is designed to help you become comfortable with the different question types you may encounter in the actual assessment. It includes sample questions from English, Maths, and Science.
Please note that the questions in this familiarisation test do not reflect the content or difficulty level of the real test. The main purpose is to give you a chance to practise interacting with various question formats in a relaxed, low-pressure setting.
In this test, you will see a range of question types, including:
- Text answers – where you type a short or full response
- True or false – where you decide if a statement is correct
- Drag and Drop – where you choose the correct option and drag it to the answer box
- Match and pair – where you link related items such as words and definitions or numbers and units
Take your time and explore how each question type works. This is not a scored test, and there is no time limit. It’s simply a way to help you feel more confident when taking the real test.
There is no limit to how many times you familiarise yourself with the question types. Please feel free to go back and try again as many times as you like.
Good luck, and remember – this is just for practice!
