Sustainability

Sustainability is of the upmost importance to our school because the choices we make today affect the world we will live in tomorrow. Climate change, increasing waste, and loss of biodiversity remind us that we must take responsibility for how we use resources. And as a school community, we believe everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment.

Our school is working towards sustainability by reducing waste, saving energy, and raising awareness about environmental issues. Through initiatives such as the clothes swap and the repair café, we are encouraging students to reuse resources. Together with the herb garden and other eco-friendly initiatives, these actions help create positive and lasting change within our school.

Our Eco-Code - Our School, Our world, Our responsibility – reminds us that our actions today shape a better future for our school, our planet and the students and teachers who will follow us.

Our sustainability journey officially started in September 2025 with lots of big ideas. These were split into 5 project areas: Kitchen, Biodiversity, Estates, Tech and Curriculum. Staff and students could sign up to an area that interested them the most and put these big ideas into practice. The staff leading each project are really passionate about sustainability and welcome new students to join their projects any time. Explore the different projects to see what we’re doing and how you can get involved.

Environmental sustainability at Reading School is growing and we’re all excited to be taking positive actions that will make our school experience better. We’ll be updating the website as we move through our journey, hoping to inform our reading School family and inspire others. Follow us on Instagram (@reading_school_sustainability) for more regular updates and reads to make you think!

We have been inspired by those around us and are supported by our Reading University Climate Ambassador and the Lets go Zero team on our planning for the future.
