Reading School is an inner-city school, located close to Reading town centre. We have close travel links to the train station, our local bus network and walking to the town centre takes 20 minutes. Being integrated in a bustling town, we have a role to ensure our students are moving around as sustainably as possible, to reduce the emissions released in a heavily populated area. This not only reduced greenhouse gasses but reduces the particulates released as well, improving the air quality we breathe in Reading.

Traveling to and from school

In 2025, we surveyed our students on which forms of transport they use to get to school. The survey revealed 62% of our students use sustainable methods to get to school. This is a positive result but leaves room for improvement, given how connected the school is which public transport.

We would encourage all our parents, students and staff to consider their journey to school, and travel as sustainably as possible. These include using Reading Buses which stop outside the school gates, the train which is a 25 minute walk from school or to cycle in and securely store their bike in one of our many covered bike stores. If a car journey is required; car sharing, dropping off on the way to work or using an electric vehicle are positives actions if possible.

Trips

At Reading School we offer a wide range of exciting trips. As part of our planning process, trip leaders consider the emission impact of the journeys made and seek alternatives to flights where possible. This is dependant on the duration of the trip, distance to travel and activities once the group arrives. The map below (Reading School Trip Map) shows flights taken by Reading School from September 2025 to July 2026. All other transport methods include minibuses and walking for local journeys, hired coaches, ferries, public buses and trains.
